SPECIAL NEWS ITEM - DMP CONTRACT CHANGE

Sunday February 22, 2009 the members of the Detroit Media Partnership Chapel voted in a contract change recently agreed to by the Company and the Union.

Due to the new way the DMP will be doing business beginning in April the company is going to lay off 15 members of the DMP Chapel. The company also wanted us to give up a negotiated raise that was due to us on January 15 of this year. Because of the newspaper business as a whole the Unions took into consideration what the company was proposing and wanted to get something for the members of the Chapel.

The Metropolitan Council of Newspaper Unions (MCNU) was able to get severance, better recall rights for laid off people and a contract extension in exchange for giving up the raise that was due to us.

What was very impressive was that the members of the Chapel understood the situation. The lay offs were going to occur anyway and this agreement was a way to help the people who were getting laid off. The Chapel voted unanimously to accept the change and give up their raise. This is an example of the members of this Chapel looking out for each other and taking care of the people who needed it.

The other members of the MCNU voted the same way. A strong council working together.
